Overuse and misuse of the eye muscles cause weak eyesight. Weakness or heat of brain is considered to be the main cause of weak eyesight. Some of the common causes responsible for weak eyesight are; watching T.V. closely and for longer durations, unbalanced living and eating habits, reading continuously in a powerful light, digestive disorder and deficiency of vitamin A. Alcohol abuse and excessive worry can also produce weakness of the eyes.

Home Remedies

There are several home remedies for weak eyesight which are easy to follow and simple to use. Some of the common home remedies are:

1. One of the simplest home remedies for weak eyesight is to consume food rich in vitamin A. Deficiency of vitamin A can result into many eyesight problems. Some of the good sources of vitamin A are milk cream, fresh milk, cheese, dates, soya beans, cabbage, lettuce, butter, turnip, tomatoes, oranges and green peas.

2. Carrot is considered to be one of the efficient home remedies for weak eyesight. Carrot is rich in nutrients such as phosphorous, vitamin A, calcium, iron, manganese and beta-carotene. You can either consume raw carrots or can try drinking carrot juice on regular basis.

3. Avoid washing your face and eyes while you are sweating, especially after being exposed to the heat of the sun or hard physical exercise.

4. Sleeping after sunrise and staying up late at night is one of the major factors responsible for weak eyesight. If your work or your routine allows you to stay up late then make it a habit of consuming cup of water after each hour.

5. Keep your eyes away from smoke, dust, strong wind and strong sunlight. Prolonged exposure to such environment can cause weak eyesight.

6. Make it a daily habit of practicing some basic eye exercises. This will prevent your eyes getting weak. It is one of the most effective home remedies for weak eyesight.

7. You can try putting mud pack on the eyes. This will help in releasing pressure and bolster the nerves.

8. Make it a daily routine to consume a spoon of honey with few cardamom seeds. This will improve the eyesight.

9. Mix one part of sugar with three parts of coriander and grind them together until they form fine powder. Now put this powder in boiling water and cover it for an hour. Take a clean cloth and filter this solution. It is ready to be used as an eye drop.

10. Consume spinach on daily basis. It is a rich source of carotenoid and is very helpful in preventing several eye problems.

11. Eat one egg every day. It is rich in protein and lutein and will protect your eye nerves and prevent cataracts.

12. Parsley has phosphorous, calcium, potassium, beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin B. Therefore consume one or one and half oz of parsley every day. This will strengthen your eyes.

13. White rose consists of vitamins B1, B2, C, P, K, E and A. It also contains iron, calcium, sodium, manganese and organic acids. All you need to do is drink a glass of wild rose tea on daily basis. This will prove to be very effective for your eyesight.

The above mentioned home remedies for weak eyesight are very effective, convenient and safe when tried at home.

Based on my last article about keeping the bugs away the natural way, hopefully we are all prepared with the knowledge and tools to help us avoid those dreaded insect bites! But what do we do if we do get caught off guard and get bit? Luckily, there are many natural remedies for reducing the inflammation, itchiness, and the overall discomfort of a bite! Many of these remedies you’ll already have handy in your home!

This Article

Improved My Health
Changed My Life
Saved My Life
Moving from California to the Philippines has definitely given me many experiences, including but not limited to a huge increase of mosquito bites. Many of the following remedies I have tried, and others have been recommended:

1. Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with water into a paste and apply onto the bites. This should stop the itching and relieve discomfort.

2. Hot Water: On a cotton pad or small towel, run hot water (careful not to burn yourself, I really go overboard on this one) and place onto the bite. Repeat. The heat will confuse the nerves to relieve the itch for at least a couple of hours.

3. Lavender: The stuff works to repel bugs and to relieve bites. Mix a tablespoon of lavender essential oil with two tablespoons of a base oil (vegetable, coconut, olive, etc.). Rub onto bite. Because this oil is an antiseptic, it will relieve the itch and inflammation.

4. Toothpaste: Rubbing just a bit of toothpaste on the bite will begin to dry out and relieve irritation.

5. Mouthwash: Apply mouthwash onto a cotton ball and hold against the bite. This will provide itch relief and a cool soothing feeling.

6. Raw Onion: Cut open a raw onion and rub onto the bite. Onions contain quercetin, a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine which has even been recognized to help hay-fever suffers!

7. Tiger Balm (or other muscle rub): This was first recommended to me in the Philippines, and I thought there was some kind of language barrier confusion. I tried it anyway and found it to be cooling and really helpful in relieving the itch.

Home remedies for diabetes will discuss the symptoms and control measures for the type 2 diabetes, which is largely determined by lifestyle factors. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder, where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the beta cells of the pancreas which produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus is due to the insufficient production of insulin by the body, or insulin resistance, which causes the blood glucose levels to shoot up. Read on to find more about the home remedies for type2 diabetes.

Diabetes home remedies – The know-how
The onset of type2 diabetes is noticed in the early 30s but these days even children are struck with the condition due to erratic lifestyle factors. Elevated blood sugar levels in the body lead to increased urination, dehydration, excessive thirst along with fatigue, weight loss and blurred vision. Diabetes, if left untreated can manifest into blindness, kidney problems, liver malfunction and overall poor performance of the body system. The home remedies for the condition will explore avenues to keep the blood sugar levels under control while countering the symptoms at the same time.

Home Remedies through a diet and exercise regimen
Olive oil oozes with oodles of health and is a good controller of the blood’s glycemic index. Use olive oil as cooking oil or as part of a salad dressing. But ensure that there is no overindulgence because as in the case of all oils even excess intake of olive oil can cause weight gain.
High fiber diet is a good home remedy for diabetes. Fiber intake prevents sporadic rise of blood sugar levels, as the food processed with fiber, releases energy (glucose) in stipulated quantities only.
Peanut butter without additives such as sugar, glucose or jelly is high in protein and, a protein-rich snack is helpful in diabetics’ metabolism.
Muscle cramps is another symptom commonly associated with diabetes. Soak in a warm water bath tub with apple cider vinegar solution for about 15 minutes. The treatment can give relief from the pain erupting from cramps.
Stick to divided meals. Three small meals and two snacks in between will help control the abrupt rise of sugar levels.
It is crucial to keep an exercise regimen for diabetes. Perspiration, re-hydration and urination, which follow after rigorous exercising, can keep the blood sugar levels under control.

Home Remedies from the fruits’ and veggies’ corner
Asparagus is recorded to give benefits to diabetics. The mild diuretic properties of asparagus help to control blood sugar levels. Eat it steamed in a dressing of lemon juice and olive oil.
Watercress is hailed as an effective home remedy for diabetes. Wash the leaves of the watercress thoroughly and eat it as part of a salad or sandwich with a low-fat spread.
Bitter gourd has been used as an effective home remedy for diabetes treatment. The vegetable contains an insulin-like substance which has been recorded to have hypoglycemic properties.
The jambul fruit, since ancient times, has been hailed for its curative properties, especially in the case of diabetes. The fruit, its seeds are known to send activating signals to the pancreas cells.

Home Remedies from the herbs’ shelf
Steep parsley leaves in tea and drink it twice a day. The herb’s diuretic effects help to lower blood sugar levels.

Fenugreek seeds, apart from reducing reactive hyperglycemia, play a vital role in controlling serum cholesterol, triglyceride levels.

Points of caution
The home remedies for type 2 diabetes may act only as supplementary measure with an ongoing treatment in case of severe manifestation.
It is imperative to consult with the care provider before resorting to the home remedies in case of Gestational diabetes(during pregnancy)

Diabetes is definitely not sugar-coating as it “spills” in the human blood-stream but home remedies for diabetes can check the condition from getting into the “in-spate” condition.

Q: I am a 12-year-old girl with very thick hair. I’ve gotten lice every year since second or third grade. This year I’ve had them four times!

I have lice now, and I’m tired of it. I am scared someone will see a louse in my hair at my camp. I tried pouring Listerine on my hair, but I couldn’t stand the smell for two hours. What else can I do?

A: If you cover your hair with a shower cap or towel after drenching it with Listerine, it should reduce the smell. Half an hour to an hour should be long enough.

Another option is to soak your hair in Cetaphil cleanser and use a blow-dryer. It will make a hard shell on your hair, but the lice should be dead when you wash it off the next morning (Pediatrics, September 2004).

Q: I am prone to very painful hand and finger cramps. When they strike, I massage them or run hot and cold water over the hands. Nothing works but time.

Today my left hand was in terrible pain that wouldn’t cease. I went to the Internet and looked up “Home Remedies for Hand Cramps.” I saw the suggestion on your website about holding a bar of soap and immediately opened a new bar. When I held it in my aching hand — poof! — the pain went away within seconds. It seemed like a miracle.

A: The idea of holding a bar of soap to overcome hand cramps grew out of the practice of preventing nighttime leg cramps with a bar of soap under the bottom sheet. Another reader reports: “We swear by the soap in the bed, and have had no problem with leg cramps in years. A few days ago, the fingers in both of my hands cramped up. I thought of the soap, held it in my hands, and the cramps went away like magic.”

We don’t know why this remedy seems to work, but many people have had success with it. Some scientists insist that it is the placebo effect. Regardless of the mechanism of action, holding a bar of soap seems like an inexpensive, low-risk solution to a painful problem.

Q: I have been diagnosed with a bad case of acid reflux. I am not supposed to eat citrus fruits, tomatoes or tomato-based foods. Those are the staples of my diet. I put tomatoes in almost everything. There go pastas, pizza, soups — you name it.

Is there anything I can put on tomatoes or fruit that will neutralize the acids? I also have been told to avoid fizzy water, caffeine and alcohol, so there’s not much left. Decaf iced tea doesn’t agree with me. Help!

A: There is an over-the-counter product called Prelief (calcium glycerophosphate) that takes the acid out of food. It comes in tablets or powder form and is sold in drugstores or online. It should make digesting juice or tomatoes less challenging.

Weight Control For Healthier Heart

Importance of Weight Control

It’s well known how important it is to achieve healthy body weight and maintain good weight control – it helps protect against diabetes, heart and cardiovascular disease, joint strain, and other circumstances that impede healthy aging.

Losing belly fat is particularly important, because studies have shown that women that have a waist measuring of 35 or more inches are about twice as likely to have coronary disease, heart problems, or even cancer as women with a waist size below 28 inches.

Body Fat Percentage and Body Mass Index (BMI)

That is a problem faced by too many people – a 2008 Mayo Clinic research recommended that the amount of stomach fat and the percentage of excess body fat in general, may represent more worrying numbers than those on the scale. The study found that more than the half of American adults considered to have “normal body weight”, according to their body mass index (BMI), actually have high body fat percentages – over 20 percent for males and 30 percent for females along with metabolic and/or heart disturbances.

Body fat percentage can be calculated in several ways, starting from calipers that measure subcutaneous fat in zones such as your upper arm and the waist, to more high-tech techniques involving special x-rays. Having excess body weight raises our blood volume, increases blood pressure, and makes extra strain to the heart. Furthermore, the excess abdominal fat results in inflammation of the blood vessels, also causing increased blood pressure.

Weight Control For Better Overall Health

Weight reduction might help reverse most of these problems – for every 2 lbs you would shed, your blood pressure will decrease about one millimeter in mercury (mmHg). While losing fat from your abdominal area can make great impact to heart health and your overall health, your overall body weight is still very important, primarily because it provides an easy target for you to aim with weight control, and due to the fact that overall weight reduction will also cut inches from your waist.

Any time you lose excess weight with some weight loss program and/or exercise or maybe with good diet pills, more loss comes from the fat around your stomach than anywhere else. That’s the reason why weight reduction is really so essential if you have an increased BMI. Help yourself to ultimately slim down and keep healthy weight by doing fitness exercise, such as a bike ride or fast walk, for at least half an hour every day, and eat balanced and healthy diet, replacing meals that are full of carbohydrates and saturated fats with low-fat foods like fresh fruit and whole grains.

Determine if you want to do this business on your own or with a partner(s). I have a business partner and we balance each other out well.

You should pick someone that you get along well with, that you can trust, and that wants the business to succeed as much as you do.

If you decide to open this business on your own, skip to step 3.

If you feel that having a partner is better for you then the next step will be to meet with an attorney and get partnership papers drawn up between the two of you. This protects both of you. It’s an agreement on how much you will pay yourselves, how each of you will be responsible for the different aspects such as accounting, bookkeeping, etc.

Decide on a professional name for your business. Have an attorney check to see if the name is available. If it is, he or she will help you claim rights to that name.

Decide how you will pay for the start up costs of the business. We used credit cards and a personal loan from a bank. Make sure that you keep your business finances completely separate from your home finances.

Research and decide what medical billing software you will use. We use Medisoft but there are many to choose from. If you are going to narrow your service to a specific specialty (anesthesia) then you may want to look for software devoted to just anesthesia.

The price range of the software programs vary greatly and can fit almost any budget.

Decide how much you will charge your clients. Most billing services charge their clients based on how much money they are able to collect from the insurance company and patient payments. Physicians like this because it encourages the biller to collect as much as possible. The average rate is between 5-8% of what is collected. Doctors make a lot of money but they don’t like spending it so try to offer them a deal.

Gain some experience! Many people that start this business have worked for a doctors office before. There are also medical billing courses that you can take. I had no experience prior to starting my business. My partner had worked for a physician before and this is what helped get our foot in the door. You can also attend seminars that will give you experience in specific areas such as credit and collections. Your local insurance companies all offer seminars as well.

Marketing! We landed our first client before we even had time to think about marketing. Then word of mouth kept new business coming. We eventually wanted to grow even faster so we placed a listing in our local phone book. We also called our local paper and they wrote a small feature article on our business

Start a small website and link it to Google. We also found Google Adwords to be a good investment that costs very little.

Network! Most states have a medical billing association that you can join. They offer a lot of tips and updates. Join a small business chapter in your area. We have one that meets once a month and you can network with other business owners.

Don’t give up. It can be discouraging at times but with some hard work and dedication, you can make it happen. If it was easy, then everyone would do it! But once you establish your business and you develop a good reputation then the amount of business you receive can be up to you. The medical field has been dubbed a “recession proof” field because people will always need medical care.

You will several times find all EMR Software Vendors as well as Physicians using EMR System and EMR Software reciprocally leading you to believe that they stand for the same thing. In fact, as shown below, they are quite different and in fact EMR Software is only one of the many parts of an EMR System.

The term “system” derives from the Greek word syst¯ema, which means to “place together” and defines a system as “an integrated set of interoperable elements, each with clearly specified and pre-defined capabilities, working seamlessly to perform value-added processing to enable a user to achieve set objectives”.

What is an EMR System?

An Electronic Medical Records (EMR) System includes the following ingredients:

1. Infrastructure – Physical and hardware system parts, for example, Workstations and Servers, Tablet PC, Laptops, Monitors, Scanners, Networking parts like Routers and Bridges, etc.

2. Software – Application software (EMR or EHR Software), Operating System software (Windows 2003 server, for example), utilities, and other applications like Instant Messaging, Fax Servers, Networking Software, Lab interfaces (with Quest, Labcorp), ePrescription, etc.

3. People – Teams involved in using, maintaining or managing the EMR – this includes the Clinical and administrative staff, Health Practitioners, etc. All these people need to receive right level of training in order to use the EMR effectively.

4. Business Processes – Standard Procedures, instructions, and steps involved in keeping the EMR System running without any issues. This includes patient appointment scheduling, appointment reminders, billing, co-pay, etc.

5. Data – Information captured, used, and supported by a system, including documents, images and databases.

It is clearly evident that EMR software is just one ingredient of an EMR System. It is simply not good enough to put together motley of ill-fitting pieces in a Medical Practice and expect them to make your operations more efficient since the various pieces may not work seamlessly and will certainly not perform value added processing.

When Physicians buy EMR Software from Electronic Health Record Software Vendors, they will typically get the following:

EMR or EHR Software (Application software)
Application Database (with required Database objects like files, triggers, stored procedures, etc.)
Configurable Lab and Pharmacy interfaces
Specifications of recommended hardware and software
As you can see, there is a vast difference between the parts listed above (as part of an EMR System) and what the EMR Vendors will typically provide.
Medical Specialists can provide quality healthcare to their patients but do not have the necessary expertise to assemble all the pieces required to build and implement an EMR System that will integrate all the required pieces of hardware and software. It is a synergistic exercise that requires close alliance between the EMR vendor, Clinical Staff, Administrative (Billing) Staff, Information Technology (IT) Support staff, Medical Specialists, etc.

By working with an proficient EMR Consulting company or an EMR Systems Integrator to build and integrate all required elements of a customized EMR System, Doctors can reduce the risk involved with any Systems Integration project, ensure notable implementation and maximize their Financial Returns from EMR or EHR Software deployment.

By Alok R Prasad

Alok Prasad is the President of RevenueXL Inc. which is a provider of Electronic Medical Records Software and Practice Management Software. RevenueXL which is based in Silicon Valley, California, provides free EMR Consulting Services as part of its EMR Selection process.

A prominent cardiologist miami accused leading heart organizations of being too cozy with industry and allowing those ties to influence its policies and education programs for doctors. Cleveland Clinic cardiology chief Dr. Steven Nissen criticized the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology in a speech at the college’s annual scientific conference on Tuesday.

Industry influence has been a growing concern, especially its funding of education programs for doctors. Some high-profile scandals have drawn attention to a problem that some doctors believe has been exaggerated to demonize companies that take big financial risks to develop drugs.

While citing examples in his speech, though, Nissen mistakenly said the Heart Association had a financial relationship with Coca-Cola. He said that tie influenced association statements that a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages needed more study, and that the findings of a study linking soda consumption to obesity were not conclusive. The reason for the association’s stance, Nissen said, was Diet Coke’s involvement in the association’s red dress campaign to raise awareness of heart disease among women.

“Our societies have been bought, and it’s time to draw the line,” Nissen said. “When you take the money, you better accept the taint that goes with it.”Trouble is, Nissen had the wrong red dress. The campaign he cited actually was between Diet Coke and the U.S. government to promote a National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute campaign.

The Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign also uses a red dress, but has no relationship with Coke, and the national association takes no money from the company, said the association’s president, Baylor University cardiologist Dr. Clyde Yancy.

Nissen’s criticism of the other group, the cardiology college, scored a hit, however. While noting the group is the gold standard for avoiding industry conflicts, he said it granted continuing medical education credits for a seminar sponsored by Merck in which an experimental Merck drug was touted. All four faculty members for the session consult for Merck.

“That is wrong. It shouldn’t happen,” admitted the college’s chief executive officer, Dr. Jack Lewin. “We can do better than that.”

The flap caused a stir at the conference and riled doctors and industry members alike. Dr. Robert Harrington, head of heart research at Duke University, who also spoke at the session, said scientists and professional societies need to do more to have “firewalls” to protect their work from corporate influence. However, most research in the United States is paid for by industry, and fair and ethical partnerships are needed to develop treatments, he said. “While it’s easy to say all of this should be funded by the NIH, that’s not the reality,” Harrington said.

If I decide to outsource my medical billing how will I keep track of it?

Many physicians today question whether or not outsourcing their medical billing to a professional medical billing service is the right way to go. These same physicians ask themselves if their medical billing is not in-house how they will really know the true status of their receivables. Prior to making a decision regarding your medical billing, it’s imperative to locate a billing service with the necessary experience and with whom you feel comfortable working.

It’s also very important to make certain that they provide you monthly reports that accurately reflect exactly what amounts they billed, how much was collected and what amount is still outstanding. Your accounts receivable should be worked on a weekly basis so that is does not go beyond the 90-day mark (there are some cases when the insurance companies take longer than 90 days).

Here are some questions you’ll want to be sure to ask a company providing medical billing services:

Do they post charges on a daily basis?
Do they transmit claims on a daily basis?
Do they post payments on a daily basis?
Do they send out monthly statements to the patients?
Will they credential any new physicians joining the practice and will they re-credential existing physicians?

I can’t stress enough that when you decide to outsource your billing you’ll want to be sure to have available a list of questions to ask the company medical billing service representative with whom you speak, and insist that your questions are answered accurately and to your satisfaction. Also, don’t be afraid to check out billing services outside of your state; the majority of medical billing services utilize the internet, fax machines and electronic claim filing, so it’s no longer necessary to practice in the same state in which your medical billing service is located.

The key to making this decision is patience; it’s highly recommended that you take your time, whether you’re just contemplating by opting for medical billing outsourcing or simply considering changing billing services. Remember, this is your income and what is ultimately best for your practice; both of these factors deserve considerable time and attention. I wish you the best.

Latest technology has simplified our lives to a great extent. Internet is helping to simplify many complicated procedures and few examples of the same are exchanging messages, contacting people in distant places using chat and emails, online shopping, reading information of latest events and happenings across the world and collecting information required related to any topic.

One of the most benefited industries from internet is the field of medicine. The latest innovation of medical technology is online patient portals. It is designed to increase communication and relation between patient and health care providers.

Online patient portal helps in efficiently managing the available resources with the local physician or provider to reduce the cost of treatment for both patient and the provider that uses advanced technology. It also enables doctors and providers in transmission of everything that is related to treatment of the patients like medical images for diagnosis, reports, medical date related to patient etc. It is also helpful in educating local physicians online on preventing development of chronic diseases via video conferences.

Online portals are also helping physicians to easily schedule appointment with patients as there is increase in demand for health care services which helps patients in avoiding to stand in lengthy lines. Patient portal helps patients to have better understanding of the disease they are suffering from, with the help of information provided and can also request for renewal of prescriptions at these portals. Patients are also offered to join various groups where other members also suffer from similar chronic diseases which help in lifting of spirits.

Patient portals not only help patients to directly contact with physicians but also to have remote access to mobile tools. Online patient portals are helping to improve quality of health care in remote and rural areas.

Patient portals are best and easy way of contacting doctors for various ailments and getting them treated without waiting for long time. They are best sources of getting advanced treatment for patients’ condition at affordable prices. They are highly beneficial for both patient and the health care provider in offering and availing best of treatments irrespective of geographic location.
